Case study solving at international level
The Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of Babeş-Bolyai University was invited to the International Case Competition@Maastricht (ICC@M) organized by the University of Maastricht. 16 teams from 10 countries and 5 continents competed with each other, by analysing business cases. The members of the „Synergy” team representing our university were Csilla Ábrán, Gáspár Albert, Zsuzsa Kerekes and Hunor Német. The preliminary round of the competition consisted of three case studies. Two of them had to be solved in 3 hours and were worth 20% each in the final score. The time available for the third case was 24 hours and the solution weighted 60%.
The 4 divisions made out of the 16 teams were competing at the same time. The winner of each division qualified to the finals. The BCC team was in a division with the following teams:
- Berkeley, University of California, USA
- Tsinghua University, China
- Queens School of Business, Canada
For the first case teams had to suggest strategies for a company (Radar) that was going through a paradigm shift. The second case was related to the field of social responsability. Teams had to suggest ideas for the future improvement of Voor Mejzelf’s goals. The 24 hour case required an implementation for Henkel’s 2016 strategy.
Based on the results of the two short cases the of GTK-Business Consulting Club team ended up forth in its division. After a more successful solution to the 24 hour case, BCC ranked second overtaking the Californian and the Chinese team in the third and the most important round.
Even though the team did not qualify to the finals, the competition enriched their knowledge and presentation skills. Special thanks for Miklós Kerezsi, Lehel Györfy, Krisztina Ábrahám coordinators of the GTK, and Zsolt Fórika for the continuous support.
