GTK students on the 3rd place of the podium of the global case competition in Sydney

During September 4-8, 2023, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) hosted in Australia the UTS Global Case Competition where 14 universities have taken part representing 11 different countries from all around the world. The team representing the Babeș-Bolyai University from Cluj-Napoca and the GTK – Business Consulting Club delivered an outstanding performance during the competition, winning the division in both qualifying rounds, earning thereby a place in the grand final where they ultimately won 3rd place.

The team from Cluj-Napoca, Romania consisted of Kende Pásztor (Management, 3rd year), Evelin-Beáta Székely (Business information systems, 3rd year), Péter Szekernyés (Finance and banking, 3rd year) and Dóra Szőke (Management, 3rd year). In the qualifying round participating teams had to solve a 6-hour and a 24-hour case: in the first case competitors had to come up with a strategy to develop the biofuel business of GrainCorp, an Australian agricultural company with global presence, while in the second case they had to propose AI-based solutions for the insurance company QBE to improve their work processes along the value chain.

In the two qualifying rounds our team was competing with the students representing the University of New South Wales, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Chulalongkorn University, winning the division in both rounds, qualifying thereby to the grand final of the competition. Based on the presentations of the finalist teams, the jury has decided to award first place to Aarhus University from Denmark, second place to the University of Amsterdam from the Netherlands, while the third place of the podium was occupied by team Babeș-Bolyai University from Romania.

Coordinators of the team winning third place were Levente Szász, Lehel Györfy and Béla-Gergely Rácz.
