Finalists and special prize at the international case competition organized by Universidad Panamericana in Mexico

Remarkable results for the students of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of the Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, and the GTK – Business Consulting Club, who achieved two qualifications to the grand final and a special prize at the 2020 Virtual Case Competition held by Universidad Panamericana in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Organized between the 5th and 7th of October 2020, the competition had 17 competing universities from all around the world, and it was held exclusively online. The contest consisted of two rounds, both being followed by a grand final. The team from Cluj-Napoca was formed by Farkas-Hegyi Beátrix (Management, 3rd year), György Ákos (Finance and Banking, 2nd year), Izsák Réka (Finance and Banking, 3rd year) and Tiboldi Dorka (Business Information Systems, 3rd year).

This year, not only the virtual space was a novelty, but the competing teams were also formed by mixing students from different universities simulating an international teamwork experience. In both rounds the teams had 15 hours to get to know each other, and to create and to present a feasible strategy. Points were awarded for the teams as a whole, individual team members collecting these points for their universities.

In the first round, the teams had to develop a strategy for a Mexican luxury furniture manufacturing company, where all members from Cluj-Napoca finished third in the group stages. In the second round, the participants had to suggest a strategy for YouTube to strengthen the company’s position in Latin-America. Although the students from Cluj – Napoca were in separate teams, they all performed remarkably in this round: Farkas-Hegyi Beátrix – 1st place in the group, Ákos György – 2nd place in the group, Réka Izsák – 1st place in the group, Dorka Tiboldi – 4th place in the group.

Based on these results, two of our students had the opportunity to participate in the grand finals, where Izsák Réka and her team finished on the second place of the podium, while Farkas-Hegyi Beátrix and her team took the third place.

Additionally, Izsák Réka earned an individual special prize for an outstanding Q&A performance during the competition.

Based on the aggregated points, the winning university was the American University of Beirut, followed by HEC Montréal, while the third place was taken by the City University of Hong Kong.

Congratulations to our students!
