Debate training sessions 24/25

During the second semester, GTK members had the opportunity to participate in a series of debate trainings led by our alumnus, Pásztor Kende, where they developed both their theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The main goals of the sessions were to deepen argumentative skills, identify logical fallacies, and master the British Parliamentary debate format.

The first training took place on March 19, focusing on the objectivity of truth. The students discussed whether objective truth exists and how the framing of events can influence their interpretation. Participants also learned about eight common logical fallacies often encountered in debates, which will help them respond more effectively to manipulation and faulty arguments.

On April 9, during the second session, the students tested their skills in a real debate scenario following the British Parliamentary format. The topic explored whether, in today’s society, influencers or politicians exert greater influence on the public. After the debate, Pásztor Kende provided detailed feedback on the participants’ performance, greatly contributing to their further development.

On April 16, the series continued with a renewed focus on identifying logical fallacies. Students analyzed video excerpts from famous political speeches and debates, evaluating arguments based on the knowledge acquired in previous sessions. After the exercises, participants shared individual feedback and reflections, which Pásztor Kende addressed, further deepening the learning process.

The final debate session of the semester was held on May 14, marking a fitting conclusion to the training series. During this event, the students debated two current and highly relevant statements in the context of the 2024–2025 election super-year, using the British Parliamentary format: “Capitalism is the most efficient known economic and social system.” and “Romania’s economic, social, and cultural future can only be imagined together with the European Union.” The participants demonstrated thorough preparation and presented objective, well-founded arguments, enriching the debates with diverse perspectives.

We would like to express our gratitude to Pásztor Kende for his valuable and thought-provoking sessions, as well as for his dedicated support of the students!
