Excellent 3rd place on the Freshhh2013 international competition

On the 30th of May, 2013 the Live Final of the Freshhh2013 competition was held in Budapest, organized by the MOL Group, an oil company. The Freshhh competition has continuously increased its popularity since its first edition in 2007, totalling more than 10.000 participants from 80 different countries over the last seven years. This year the competition achieved a record number of applicants, with over 2.600 students forming 887 teams from 60 different countries. The team from Cluj-Napoca, representing the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of the Babeş-Bolyai University, composed of 3 GTK members (Balázs Furdek, Roland Rákóczi and Ádám Salamon), has earned an excellent 3. place in this competition.

The competition consists of 3 rounds: two online qualification rounds and the live final, held in Budapest. In the first round, the teams had to manage an oil company, making important decisions about field acquisitions, production and the optimal processing of crude oil in the company’s refinery. The 40 teams with the highest profits got in the second round, where this year the task was to manage a gas station as profitable as possible. The best 10 teams with the highest profits made it to the live final.

In this year’s live final in Budapest several directors and managers of the company evaluated the teams’ live performance in solving different problems. Each team had to prepare a presentation on a previously given subject, play a strategic cooperation game and produce paper planes profitably in a simple simulated business environment. The language of each round of the competition was English.

Three members of the GTK participated on Freshhh2013: Balázs Furdek, Roland Rákóczi and Ádám Salamon, under the team name Lotus. The team successfully made it to the finals through the qualification rounds and won an excellent 3rd prize (bronze award) in the live final. The result justifies almost 3 months of continuous dedicated work and the determination of team members to deliver the best performance possible.
